Kitchen Design

Common-sense principles for a green kitchen

Posted on Nov 10 2017 by Martin Holladay

Every decade, kitchen design becomes more complicated. It’s gotten to the point where some residential designers subcontract the work to a specialist.

If you are a humble owner-builder, do your kitchen preferences even matter anymore? Of course they do. If you’re building a house, you should certainly have a say in matters affecting kitchen design — even if your ideas are different from those of the experts.

All-Electric vs. Natural Gas

Planning a new house in Houston, an owner-builder juggles the pros and cons of sticking with natural gas

Posted on May 15 2017 by Scott Gibson

Given a photovoltaic(PV) Generation of electricity directly from sunlight. A photovoltaic cell has no moving parts; electrons are energized by sunlight and result in current flow. system with a capacity of as much as 8 kilowatts, does it make any sense to include natural gas appliances in a new house, or would an all-electric design be more practical?

That's the question Markus ponders as he plans a new house in Houston, Texas. Although he has natural gas service in the house where he currently lives, the size of his new rooftop solar system could prompt a change of heart.

An Induction Cooktop for Our Kitchen

Our new electric range is the bee’s knees — and it even saves energy

Posted on Oct 24 2012 by Marc Rosenbaum

We don't often think about the energy we use for cooking. In the most economically disadvantaged countries, gathering energy for cooking is a major component of people's time (mostly women), and smoke from wood cooking fires is a significant health issue. One great solution for these people is solar cookers, and this organization is my favorite non-profit, because it helps the planet's poorest people while doing environmental good.
