Steve Mouzon on the New Business of Business

If you are willing to be patient, giving things away can often help your bottom line

Posted on May 5 2015 by Fernando Pages Ruiz

The green-building movement proved resilient during the Great Recession and beyond. While conventional builders went bankrupt, many green builders thrived. This trend continues, so when I heard that green-building guru Steve Mouzon, author of The Original Green, was holding a seminar on new approaches to building up green business, I wanted to know more.

I spoke with Steve while he was on the road in Birmingham, Alabama, and I asked him, "What's different about the new green business plan from the traditional builder's approach?"

Posted on Dec 10 2013 by Scott Gibson

Like a lot of builders, Santa Cruz, California, contractor Mike Hartrich relied on word-of-mouth referrals to keep his business in the black. Although he never advertised, he had plenty of work.

Those were the good old days. Then, in 2009, the construction business dried up as the economy went into a tailspin. "I'd always stayed busy," he said recently by phone, "and then all of a sudden I wasn't."

Why do consumers care more about the technical specifications of their shredded wheat than their homes?

Posted on Aug 2 2013 by Martin Holladay

Just the other day, I was looking at a box of breakfast cereal. The largest lettering on the box were the three words naming the cereal: Frosted Shredded Wheat. Next in prominence came the tag line: “Contains 6 g. of fiber per serving.”

You’re probably thinking, “so what?” Manufacturers of processed food make claims like this so frequently that we’ve all gotten used to them.

Early this year, five window makers agreed to settle Federal Trade Commission charges that the firms had made deceptive claims about the energy efficiency and energy cost savings that their windows could deliver.
