Lined masonry chimney vs an insulated stainless steel chimney

PipBell | Posted in Energy Efficiency and Durability on

This would be a single flue chimney that would just serve the wood stove/ and or eventually the masonry heater. What are the plus/minuses of both and the realistic life span of them? Our primary source of heat will be wood.

    Philip,
I used to be a firm believer in masonry chimneys lined with clay flue tiles; I have two stone chimneys in my own house. However, masonry chimneys represent a significant thermal bridge; these chimneys can leak a lot of heat, and are more likely to lead to ice dams than metal chimneys.

I think that the era of the metal chimney has arrived, and it's time to bid adieu to brick chimneys and stone chimneys.
