Mastic over asbestos tape?

MidDayRambler | Posted in Energy Efficiency and Durability on

I just purchased a 1930s home that has asbestos tape over metal furnace ducting. It’s in pretty good shape, but there are some cracks. I plan on converting part of the basement (where the furnace is located) into living space and would like to seal all the compromised asbestos. Mastic seems easier than tape. Is this OK?

    Jeff,
If asbestos fibers are released into the air as a result of your work, the fibers could be inhaled, creating a serious risk of cancer or mesothelioma. Because of this risk, I don't recommend your approach.

If you want to encapsulate the asbestos on your ducts, you should call up a certified asbestos abatement contractor.
