Cedar shingles over foam board?

user-901114 | Posted in General Questions on

1940’s cape with vinyl over shingles in zone 5a zip 02452. Considering stripping the front of the house and putting typar, then at least r5 of foamboard. Question: Is it possible to put shingles over the foamboard? Just use longer staples? Any problem with having exterior foam on only one side of the house? It’s the south side.

What if I put a nailbase sheathing over the foam board?

    Stephen,
Right -- that's the way it's usually done. Either install OSB over the rigid foam, or use nailbase. One project I visited using that approach was the home of Claudia King and Lindsey Tweed in Maine. Read about it here: More Job Site Visits in Maine.
