    Russ,
I looked into that question when I researched my article on radon mitigation (All About Radon).

As far as I could determine, the answer to your question is no.

IMO getting struck by lightning or being eatin by an anaconda are more likely than being harmed by radon. Who lives in basements? How much radon is in living space verses the great outdoors? Studies for radon illnesses have not taken into account smoking. Has anyone ever met someone who has been attacked by radon? Anyone?

"Radon is the number one cause of lung cancer among non-smokers, according to EPA estimates. Overall, radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer. Radon is responsible for about 21,000 lung cancer deaths every year. About 2,900 of these deaths occur among people who have never smoked. On January 13, 2005, Dr. Richard H. Carmona, the U.S. Surgeon General, issued a national health advisory on radon."

Russ, if you are building a new foundation, I'd recommend you look at Vaporblock Plus 20:

for under your slab. I just used it under mine after a lot of research about radon blocking sheeting. This beats standard 6-mil polyethelene by a mile. You can buy it here:
