Exterior wall options for southern Manitoba

Bryonfriesen | Posted in Green Building Techniques on

Good evening we are in the planning stages of building a new house. The builder has given us an option of 2×4 walls in the build. They can be upgraded to 2×8 with staggered 2x4s, or a double wall system 2×6 with a 2×4 wall. What would be some recommendations. I like the idea of the larson truss system. Would they build a interior 2×4 wall then add the larson system to the outside? What could be the potential cost differences between each option. I am curious about the R value for walls ROI.

Thanks

Bryon

    Byron,
In Manitoba, you need a high-R wall. (Are 2x4 walls even legal in Manitoba?) Most builders chose one of two options: Either a double-stud wall (with a total wall thickness ranging from 9.5 to 12 inches, generally) or a 2x6 wall with a continuous layer of exterior insulation (either rigid foam or mineral wool).

Larsen trusses usually end up costing more than either of the two above options. That said, it's important to choose a wall system that your builder is familiar with -- one that your builder is comfortable building.

You asked, "What could be the potential cost differences between each option?" Since you are negotiating with a builder, the best person to ask that question to is your builder.
