Thermal mass volume

ChristaC | Posted in Green Building Techniques on

Another related question: When measuring square area of the floor that may receive sunlight, do we include all of the uncovered floor area next to the south facing windows, even though some of the floor, like that abutting the south wall, will never get direct sunlight?

Thanks

    Christa,
Some passive solar designers install fixed glass that reaches the floor. If your windows won't reach the floor, then you're right -- there will be an area of floor near the windows that never gets direct sun.

So calculate the area of the floor that will get direct sun (as best you can) without including the shaded portions.
