Installing exterior trim with a rainscreen

ranson | Posted in Green Building Techniques on

I’m planning horizontal shiplap siding over 4″ of foam with a rainscreen gap for my house. How do I make the rainscreen accommodate exterior trim around the windows? Do I just make the furring picture frame wider than the trim, wide enough to support the ends of the siding?

    John,
I take it you are planning to butt the siding to the trim, rather than install it over the shiplap.
Yes, the pieces at the jambs need to be wide enough to cover the joint. At the head and sill the vertical furring can be as narrow as you choose.

    John,
I agree with Malcolm. For more details on wide furring strips, see this article: Attaching Corner Trim on Walls With Rigid Foam.
