   In an insulated ceiling -- none, as John says.

   In an uninsulated ceiling -- say, between the first and second floor -- anything you want. It's easy to buy screw-base CFLs now; CFL reflectors are a good choice for recessed can lights.

   I'd use the pin-type dedicated flourescent type for un-insulated ceilings.

   I would have to agree with John Brooks: none.

   Not only is there no place in an insulated, air-sealed ceiling for recessed lighting, but since they offer significantly fewer broadcast lumens per watt of consumed power they don't belong in a truly green home (except perhaps in very specific locations for task lighting, such as in kitchen soffits for workspace lighting).
