Product for de-icing

user-1016143 | Posted in Green Products and Materials on

Does anyone have any recommendations for de-icing products for walkways and driveways that are less detrimental than standard de-icing salts?

How about fine, crushed rock? (No pea gravel; it rolls and will be hazardous.) Very environmentally friendly, impedes slipping quite well, and will help melt ice when the sun hits it. Yes, in the spring, someone may have to sweep all the rocks up, but they can likely be saved for re-use or used in a garden, driveway, fish bowl, etc.

There are alcohol based products that you can spray on that are presumably more biodegradable.
