Community and Q&A

Is there any low- or no-VOC, mold-resistant sheetrock and wall plaster on the market (for basement reconstruction)?

Nat473 | Posted in Green Products and Materials on

It is my understanding that sheetrock and wall plaster are typically high-VOC items, especially mold-resistant sheetrock.

Also, are carpet tiles a good low- or no-VOC flooring option?

    Nathaniel,
Most drywall installations are not associated with high VOCs.

If you are interested in a mold-resistant wall panel, you should consider DensArmor Plus and DensShield. As noted in GBA's product directory, "Georgia-Pacific Gypsum manufactures the Dens line of paperless gypsum board products, which offer excellent mold resistance for residential and commercial construction. Instead of paper facings, the Dens products incorporate fiberglass mats on surfaces."

If your main concern is VOCs, you might consider the use of Certainteed AirRenew gypsum board. As noted in an article published by BuildingGreen, "With its new AirRenew wallboard, CertainTeed aims to actually remove volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from the room where the product is installed. It won’t remove all VOCs, but the company claims that it does a good job with one of our most prevalent—and troubling—VOCs, formaldehyde (as well as other aldehydes)."
