Contractor did not install air return in the bedrooms. There is only one large air return in the hallway.

What is the right size gap for HRV air flow? Nominally 24cfm. I know for aesthetic reasons, 1/2" or less is preferred. Would 3/4" be a reasonable compromise, or could I get away with 1/2"? Easier to cut some more door off than add it back on.
