Only an inch gap below interior door — is that enough to promote air return in a bedroom with a closed door?

Contractor did not install air return in the bedrooms. There is only one large air return in the hallway.

    A. No. For more information, see Return-Air Problems.

What is the right size gap for HRV air flow? Nominally 24cfm. I know for aesthetic reasons, 1/2" or less is preferred. Would 3/4" be a reasonable compromise, or could I get away with 1/2"? Easier to cut some more door off than add it back on.

See below, but don't count on your door edges and room being as leaky as the ones the graph is based on.
