Cranking Out Green, Affordable, Gut Rehabs

Don Marx is a very busy man for a guy who is “retired.” But as Chair of Construction on the Habitat for Humanity Buffalo Board, he manages as many as 12 whole-house renovations and 4 new homes a year. That’s supervising 8,000 volunteer labor hours for each renovation and 4,000 hours for each new home. And all of Don’s hours are in that total; he is a volunteer himself.

The ‘Shamrock Shack’ Retrofit – A Family Style of Green

In 1938, Carl McCarthy started his “Shamrock Shack,” a small (700 square feet) weekend retreat overlooking the golf course in Sharp Park (now part of Pacifica), Calif., while he and his wife, Grace, lived 10 miles north in an apartment in San Francisco. He had virtually no building experience and no power tools.

Green by (Interior) Design

A Thick Cocoon of Cellulose Protects This Superinsulated House

I was hired to design and build a home for a Vermont land owner who wanted a house that would be affordable to build, affordable to live in, as green as possible, accessible as she aged, and able to generate rental income.

We collaborated on the design, planning, permitting, and site work. We created a floor plan that would place all necessary living spaces on the first floor. The second floor has a great room, two additional bedrooms, and a second full bath so that she could rent space to boarders.
