Roof panels can be made of metal, a composition of fibers and asphalt, or other materials, but they must be durable enough to withstand the ultraviolet radiation and other elements experienced on a roof.
Metal roofing, properly installed, is highly durable and readily recyclable at the end of its useful life. Using dissimilar metals for roofing, flashing, and fastening isn't recommended because they're susceptible to galvanic corrosion in the presence of water. Metal is also a preferred material for roofs used in rainwater catchment systems. In northern climates, snow readily slides off metal roofs, avoiding the damage caused by ice dams.
In recent years, manufacturers have introduced low-slope metal roofing systems to complement more conventional steep-slope products.
