  • Reduces heating and cooling loads

Description

The Perlite Institute is a trade association dedicated to the perlite industry, and lists 26 manufacturers of perlite insulation as members. GreenSpec lists the Perlite Institute for finding those manufacturers. The density of perlite ranges from 1.9–11.2 lb/ft2 and the R-valueMeasure of resistance to heat flow; the higher the R-value, the lower the heat loss. The inverse of U-factor. ranges from 2.4–3.7 per inch, increasing as the density decreases. Perlite is an amorphous volcanic rock that has fairly high water content. The natural rock is crushed and then rapidly heated to 1,600°F, which expands the granules from four- to twenty-fold, producing a lightweight insulating material with a density ranging from 1.9 to about 11 lbs/ft3. Perlite is commonly used to insulate hollow concrete masonry units.
