Choose active solar heating
Active-solar heating is beneficial in climates where passive-solar heating cannot supply virtually the entire heating loadRate at which heat must be added to a space to maintain a desired temperature. See cooling load..
In a super-insulated house in mild climates, solar-powered hot water may provide enough heat for the whole structure. Active-solar heating can be configured so that no fuel combustion or on-site storage is required.
The cost-effectiveness of a solar-heating system depends on the price of competing nonrenewable fuels and, of course, on how much sunshine the location receives.
LEED for HomesLeadership in Energy and Environmental Design. LEED for Homes is the residential green building program from the United States Green Building Council (USGBC). While this program is primarily designed for and applicable to new home projects, major gut rehabs can qualify. A third-party inspection of minimal Energy StarLabeling system sponsored by the Environmental Protection Agency and the US Department of Energy for labeling the most energy-efficient products on the market; applies to a wide range of products, from computers and office equipment to refrigerators and air conditioners. performance is mandatory; up to 34 pts. for Exceptional Energy Performance (EA 1); Up to 3 pts. for solar water heating (EA7.3).
NGBSNational Green Building Standard Based on the NAHB Model Green Home Building Guidelines and passed through ANSI. This standard can be applied to both new homes, remodeling projects, and additions. Under Ch. 7 — Energy Efficiency: up to 20 pts. for solar water heating (704.3.2.1).
