Choose carpeting and rugs made from natural or recycled materials
Look for carpeting that meets third-party tests for low-emissions.
Choices for greener carpeting and area rugs include products made from natural materials, such as hemp, cotton, jute, or wool. Try to avoid wool treated with moth-proofing and other pesticides. Look for products that do not have stain-repellent surface treatments. Choose products rated for low emissions in third-party testing, such as Green Label Plus from the Carpet and Rug Institute. Avoid carpet cushioning that may contain brominated flame retardants (BFRs), such as bonded polyurethane foam. Once available only for commercial applications, carpet tile is now being produced in styles, patterns, and textures that suit residential designs. Carpet tiles can be replaced easily if damaged or stained.
