Choose windows that block sound
When choosing windows, evaluate the noise nearby.
Operable windows are a lot less airtight than fixed windows. As a result, they also allow more sound to pass through. Where possible, keep operable windows on parts of the house where noise is not going to be a problem. Awning and casement windows with compression gaskets are much more effective at reducing air leakage and noise transmission than sliders or double- and single-hung windows. Homeowners usually prefer windows they can open and close. Giving up that option is certainly a compromise.
