Encapsulate Lead Paint When Removing It Is Not Feasible
Lead-contaminated dust from old paint can pose a serious health threat.
Children are especially vulnerable. When removal isn't pracical, encapsulation is a viable alternative. Simply painting over lead paint is not an effective means of encapsulation because lead can work its way to the surface, and when the new paint is chipped lead paint will be exposed. Applying a new finish surface, such as gypsum drywall, over contaminated surfaces is one option. If extensive work is required or if paint must be removed, be sure to consult a certified abatement contractor or qualified professional. Check federal, state, and local regulations.
