Integrate wastewater treatment with landscape design
Landscape design can incorporate artificial wetlands and gray water irrigation.
Both are effective and green ways of dealing with waste. In a constructed wetland, wastewater goes first to a settling tank that captures solids and then to the roots of a specially landscaped area of wetland plants, which break down contaminants. A gray water system uses water from sinks, showers, and tubs for irrigation. But construction costs may be substantial and codes do not allow the practices in some areas.
