Investigate a site's microclimate
Site conditions matter more than area averages.
Sometimes weather and climatic conditions at a house site are different from what's generally reported for the area, especially when weather data is collected at the closest urban airport. For instance, temperature varies with elevation, dropping from 3º to 5° F. for every 1,000 feet of increase. Wind patterns can be altered considerably by terrain. An on-site assessment can range from occasional site visits to setting up weather instruments at various locations. The information can be used for building placement and design as well as landscaping.
