Water heaters and HVAC equipment belong in a conditioned space

Efficiency is lower when equipment is placed in a space that gets too hot or cold.
Air handlers, like ducts, can cause a variety of problems when they're in an unconditioned space and they're not completely sealed. Moisture in warm air that escapes will condense when it runs into cold surfaces. Heating and cooling equipment that's located in an unconditioned space has to work harder when ambient air temperatures are too hot or too cold so they use more energy. Equipment is unlikely to last as long.
