Earth sheltering is the creation of a below-grade conditioned spaceInsulated, air-sealed part of a building that is actively heated and/or cooled for occupant comfort. , whether by making an earthen berm around the structure or cutting into the existing grade. It reduces temperature swings inside the building, so it can save energy for both heating and cooling. In hot, dry climates, this strategy may eliminate the need for mechanical cooling.
