Maintain indoor humidity below 60%
High humidity encourages the growth of mold
To reduce the risk of mold and other allergenic organisms, keep the relative humidity indoors to between 30% and 60%. To control dust mites, keep it below 50%. Relative humidity in this range is more comfortable, and it's kinder to furniture, trim and flooring. The only way to keep relative humidity low when the outdoor air is warm and humid is with a dehumidifier or air conditioning. All homes should be outfitted with a hygrometerA device that measures relative humidity of air. Mechanical hygrometers that rely on a coil of thin metal are not terribly accurate; electronic hygrometers available at most electronic or hardware stores are usually accurate to about plus or minus 2 - 3%., which measures relative humidity.
