Use a rainwater collection system

Capturing rainwater for landscape irrigation makes sense.
A simple rainwater-harvesting system doesn't have to be any more complicated than a barrel positioned under a gutter downspout. More elaborate systems include underground cisterns large enough to supply a family's water through the dry season. The storage tank should be covered to keep out animals, children, and sunlight. Check local ordinances for restrictions.
