Replace pipes and fixtures if water tests positive for lead

Older lead water pipes, brass faucets, fittings, or copper pipes joined with lead-based solder can release lead into drinking water.

The most common cause is corrosion. The practice of grounding electrical equipment to water pipes increases corrosion. Check with an electrician about alternate grounding strategies.

When repairing or installing new plumbing, use lead-free materials. You can verify manufacturer claims by contacting the National Sanitation Foundation.
