Simplify the HVAC duct system

Ducts for heating and cooling don't have to be along exterior walls.
Ducts are traditionally installed near the building's perimeter to offset energy losses from windows and exterior walls. More energy-efficient windows and wall systems allow a simplified central distribution system. Supply registers can be located high on interior walls, right off of a hallway supply trunk. Shorter duct runs are less expensive to install and reduce the potential for leaks. If the windows and walls are not thermally efficient, it may be necessary to run ducts to the perimeter to provide comfort--but look into upgrading the building envelopeExterior components of a house that provide protection from colder (and warmer) outdoor temperatures and precipitation; includes the house foundation, framed exterior walls, roof or ceiling, and insulation, and air sealing materials.'s efficiency first.
