Treat bathroom shower windows like outdoor windows
A tub or shower surround is a popular, but sometimes-problematic place to put a window.
There’s little wonder: Two eight-minute showers each day equal approximately 100 in. of driving rain.
It’s best to keep windows and skylights out of the tub/shower area. But, if you just can’t help yourself, for watertight windows, do the following:
- Use waterproof materials such as marble or Corian. If you choose tile, use epoxy-based grout.
- Use pan flashing beneath the sill and seal the installation as you would an exterior sill.
- Rather than wood or metal, choose moisture-tolerant window jambs and casing materials such as plastic or fiberglass.
- Use durable marine or polyurethane sealants in any remaining gaps.
