Use furnaces with variable-speed blowers and burners

Variable speed means greater efficiency
Variable settings allow furnace fans and burners to operate more efficiently. Single-speed motors must cycle on and off frequently under most conditions, and they don't operate efficiently during start-up. Another benefit: Furnaces are quieter when blowers run at lower speeds.
