Use photoelectric daylight sensors
Why run lights when they're not needed?
Daylight sensors are common for outdoor lighting, turning the light on automatically as darkness falls. But when light is needed only sporadically, a smarter approach is to couple the sensor with a motion detector so the lights switch on only when they're really necessary. The length of time the light remains on can be adjusted, limiting the amount of energy that's used.
