I was recently at IBS 2025 checking out a very cool helical pile company that featured a one-man drill for setting foundation screws (Ground screw for solid foundations – Stop Digging in case you are interested). Ben Bogie, who was in the booth next to me, called me over to check out some glass-testing equipment. I probably would have missed this booth if not for Ben.
I’m kind of a tool freak. I try to keep up with what’s on the market for tools, especially tools used to test and commission homes. I own blower doors and duct-test equipment. I have a couple different thermal-imaging cameras, and I even recently purchased an acoustic air-leak detector. I was a little surprised that I had never heard of the company EDTM Inc. or the tools they manufacture in Toledo, Ohio.
EDTM manufactures glass-, window-, and film-testing equipment. In chatting with the company’s owner, Mark Imbrock, I learned that his company has been around for 31 years. EDTM manufacturers test equipment for residential and commercial window glass, including verification of glass thickness, number of panes, space between panes, and coating detection. While I was at the booth at IBS, two tools caught my eye: the WP4501 Window Energy Profiler and the GC3200 Glass-Chek Elite.
Why can a glass verification tool be handy?
One of my duties in energy auditing and building investigations is energy modeling. Rarely do I have the window performance metrics of an existing home. Having a tool that can help determine window performance could be beneficial. Another reason to use these tools is to check window metrics before a window replacement job. You may be able to show a homeowner how a different glass might help change the solar heat gain. Choosing different glass for replacement windows might reduce cooling…
