Abatement question

MrsMDP | Posted in Building Code Questions on

I recently had an abatement. I have 8 vents in my home. They removed 5 ducts and 25 feet of flex duct original to my 1975 home.  What is the reason for fewer ducts than vents? The duct work installer out in 5 ducts too. Thank you. Also where are insulated hey wires found? HVAC Furnace  or ??? The HVAC person told me he’d be back to replace them but never has! Are they fire FS danger? Thank you

A single run of duct can, and often has, multiple diffusers along its length, to provide conditioned air to multiple rooms or multiple locations in larger rooms. You don't run a separate duct from the air handler (or furnace) to every diffuser.

Thank you. I think the installer took out 5 ducts and left 3 with asbestos still in the attic

    So many questions.

    What was abated?
What parts of the home is the work being performed?
Is the HVAC system currently operational?
In the contractor’s opinion is the work complete?
Did you make the final payment?
What are “hey wires”? haywire maybe?
Since one can’t really buy haywire, it would be hard to comment on if it was installed safely. LOL

Thank you. The guy left me with main line totally dis-connected for 14 months. Didn’t pull out black bag insert. He is not to be trusted. He used flex ductwork and the ties are not to code on Calif(#89) I never saw him bring in one piece of ductwork. I was sitting right there. Did not do CA required. Hers test. Lied about being incorporated licensed and bonded.my

What do you mean "somewhat uninsulated? Can you take some pictures and post them here? No one would run bare copper wire, which would be completely "uninsulated". The other option would be all insulated wire. Maybe you had rats chew the wire? Again, we'd need to see some pictures to better understand what you're talking about here.

3 hey (whey) wires are located somewhere in my home, I have no idea what or where they are❗️ HVAC wires? He told me he’d be back to replace them. Never came. Rats probably did chew them. I don’t know how to post photos. Thank you.

Bill, it sounds like 3-way control wire. It should be insulated but I wouldn't put it past a hack to use 2-wire and bare copper for the third. More likely the insulation was eaten in some areas.

MrsMDP, this sounds like storybook "bad contractor" situation, which is very unfortunate. Do you have a written contract with them? If you can find a sympathetic lawyer, they may be able to help you. Or just accept that you've lost money and pay someone else to complete the work. I'm sorry that this happened to you; there are a lot of excellent contractors out there, and plenty of bad ones too.

Hello and thank you. I do have legal help. I intend to submit a complaint to state contractors bureau and post online. I don’t expect any $ to result. I think I will have a male figure in my home when I need help. “ It is what it is” is all I can say. Thank you again
