Adding rigid foam to roof – leave EPDM in place?

Ruairi | Posted in General Questions on

Hello all,

During a reroof of my home, I will be insulating the deck with rigid foam, adding another layer of sheathing, and cellulose or batts between joists. Much of the roof is low-slope shed dormers, with EPDM. Is it unwise to just leave the areas currently covered by EPDM in place? My thoughts are that it doesn’t require installation, there is some polyiso under the EPDM, and it already works as an air and weather barrier.

When I remove the drip edges, I can just tape the EPDM to my wall WRB to create a continuous barrier.

This would significantly reduce the amount to be torn out and put in a landfill as well.

Any issues with this approach?
