Air Sealing and Chimneys

William_07 | Posted in Green Building Techniques on

Is it possible to have a chimney and still have an air sealed house up to “pretty good house” standards?  If so how would you keep an air sealed chimney and stove in a new construction situation?

I live in Maine and I’m building my new house, and a wood stove chimney is in our plans to utilize as a fairly inexpensive heat source where I am. But I’d like to keep it from being a major air leak point as I’m trying to keep a continuous air barrier around the envelope. Looking for advice.

You use two piece of sheet metal (each with a half circle cut out) to span between the framing to the chimney. calk the metal seams with fireproof calk to air seal. and use mineral wool insulation to insulate around the chimney. https://www.jlconline.com/how-to/insulation/weatherizing-a-double-wall-metal-chimney_o
