Air-to-water systems are growing in popularity and for good reason!

The advantages of the outdoor, mono-blok systems is that the refrigerant, a potent global warming compound, is factory sealed into the unit. With split systems, there is always a danger of refrigerant leaks, and the linesets have a limited lifespan so somewhere in the 10-20 year range you will probably need to redo them.

Zone 12 sounds like you're in the greater Sacramento, California area. California has its own climate zone system that doesn't match the rest of the US. It's very mild there; outdoor equipment should last a long time.
