Black backer/background options behind gapped vertical siding?

user-968917 | Posted in Energy Efficiency and Durability on

Hello:

Wondering about what cost-effective options exist for creating a permanently black background behind gapped vertical siding (cladding boards with 1/4 to 3/8 inch gaps between them).

Wall assembly is 2×6 R20 X 24″ OC, 1/2 plywood taped as air barrier, WRB, 6″ Halo Xterrra EPS foam, ripped plywood strapping (horizontal), vertical cladding boards.

We would normally specify felt paper here but architects feel that this will fade/discolour over time due to UV exposure. Facings on the EPS foam not likely paintable (at least not long term).

Thanks in advance!

    Gio,

There are several WRBs designed specifically for the increased demands placed on them by open-cladding. This is one: https://dorken.com/insights/uncategorized/role-of-wrb-in-open-joint-cladding-design/

Ripped plywood horizontal strapping is not the best idea behind open cladding. These will rot over time.

You are better off using 1x3 composite trim or ripped pieces of composite decking. Even better notched or perforated metal Z grits.
