Blower door test – Des Moines, Iowa

rhallen645 | Posted in Project Management on

Hi:

I’m trying to help a friend in Des Moines, Iowa obtain a blower door test & follow it up with directed air sealing. How does/should one go about finding a contractor to perform a blower door test? Is there a city/state database of contractors able to perform a blower door test? For renovation projects, how do most contractors who perform blower door tests receive new business? Lastly, what should one look for when choosing a contractor to perform a blower door test and/or air sealing?

Thanks,
Rob

    Rob,
You should do an online search for a RESNET-certified rater or a BPI-certified professional.

Here are the results of a BPI search:
    http://www.bpi.org/tools_locator.aspx?associateTypeID=CTR

    Possibilities include:

Energy Masters Commercial, Des Moines, IA

    A-Tec Energy Corp., Urbandale, IA

    Siemens Industry, Ankeny, IA

You can do a similar search for RESNET-certified raters on this page:

I just had a blower door test done. The technician brought an infrared camera that was really useful for picking up cold spots. She also cranked up the blower to well above 50 pascals so we could more easily find drafty spots.

Finally, make sure your contractor is present so he or she can fix any leaky areas. We were able to drop the air leakage from about .8ach50 to below .6 by spending just a few minutes on spots picked up by the camera and/or the increased pressure. You may also see spots that need more extensive attention.
