A/C registers and ceiling fan spacing

user-7426231 | Posted in General Questions on

Hopefully this hasn’t been asked and answered previously – did a search and couldn’t find anything pertinent –

Is there any sort of industry standard (ASHRAE, ACCA, ANSI) or code guidance (UMC, IRC) as to the proximity of ceiling mounted air conditioning diffusers and ceiling fans?  There’s no shortage of anecdotal ‘…generally speaking’ and ‘…as a rule of thumb’ advice, but I haven’t found anything else.

Thanks.

I'll give your post a bump to see if anyone can answer your question. As far as supply placement, I know you want to avoid locating them where they will be blowing on occupants. Also... If you build an efficient structure, ceiling fans are not necessary. I haven't had any in my last two homes.

Hi user-7426231 (It would be great to get your real name).

I'm not very knowledgeable of HVAC, but I would imagine that it is important to get this right. HVAC designers are counting on how registers throw air into a room to make sure that it is a comfortable space and I have to imagine that a ceiling fan has an effect on this. Maybe it's a positive or neutral effect, but I am curious to see how this is answered by some of our member with HVAC expertise.

The most likely place to find that would be in the ACCA Manual T (https://www.acca.org/store#/productDetail/7173AD5F-BC20-E511-80FA-C4346BACEBF4/). I looked through the whole book and didn't see anything about ceiling fans in it. It's probably not there because ceiling fans do a lot of mixing of the air in a room, so the performance of the vents themselves doesn't really matter much when a ceiling fan is running.
