Combining Vented Roof with Unvented Assembly

herronrj | Posted in Energy Efficiency and Durability on

I am finishing off attic space in a 1920’s home with a hip roof.  On two sides, the rafters terminate into the rafters going to the other direction.  I am able to vent the rafter bays that extend to the peak (ridge vent).  What should I do in rafter bays that do not extend to the peak and those that terminate below my ceiling height?  Am I able to do an unvented assembly in those bays?

    heronrj,

Yes you can make those rafter bays un-vented. One part of the roof doesn't care how another part is insulated. This link provides several options: https://www.greenbuildingadvisor.com/article/five-cathedral-ceilings-that-work
