Duct Turning Vanes

user-7653783 | Posted in Mechanicals on

How do I tell if my galvanized steel rectangular ductwork has turning vanes without taking the ductwork apart?

Turning vanes need to be secured to the duct - typically with rivets or screws. If your ductwork is uninsulated you should be able to see a number of these running diagonally from the inside to outside corner. Or, if you have a register near enough that you can remove and then stick your arm (or other device) into the duct holding a cell phone recording in camera mode, you can often get a good glance in tighter places.

Thanks. I'll try the cell phone camera in the duct. The elbow is un-insulated, and unfortunately I don't see any signs of rivets or screws on the outside of the duct
