Emercor Insulated Rim Board: Do I need to spray foam the rim joists

Nav88 | Posted in Expert Exchange Q&A on

Hi I am in the same boat. I am based in Edmonton, Alberta: Climate zone 4A.
I have the same type of insulated rim board and the builder didnt insulated the rim joists with spray foam. I am finishing my basement now and was wondering if I need to spray foam them. Or any impacts if I spray foam the insulated rim board?

I think they are out of business ...

But Weyerhaeuser makes a similar product

      begreener,

It looks like a better version, without the thermal bridging at the top or bottom.

Agreed. It looks like a typical LSL rim joist with some Zip-R pre-laminated to it. Nice product. This gets the rim joist insulation on the exterior, which is better than the more commonly retrofitted interior side too. I don't see any issue if someone were to want to put some exterior rigid foam over this too if they insulated the rest of the exterior the same way.
