Insulating ERV / Bathroom Exhaust Fan in a Conditioned Space

user-7202783 | Posted in General Questions on

Is there any good reason to insulate bathroom exhaust fan and/or ERV ducts (4″ or 6″) when they are contained entirely within conditioned space (with the obvious exception of the exhaust/intake terminations, which will be encapsulated in closed cel foam insulation at the wall penetrations).

thanks for any guidance!

In Saving Sustainably: Installing the Ventilation System, contributor Matt Bath makes the point that “installing the ducts in conditioned space reduces the cost of insulating them and makes the system work more efficiently. Most important, it eliminates any potential condensation that could ruin the attic insulation.” You might like to see how he approached it.
