Experience with VRF heat pumps and AC systems

Patrick Mccombe | Posted in General Questions on

Good Afternoon GBA Community,
I’m researching a Fine Homebuilding article on residential VRF (variable refrigerant flow) central heat pumps and air conditioners. I’m asking for you to share any experiences you’ve had with VRF systems in a residential setting: good, bad, even unremarkable. I’m talking about both the multi head-systems more commonly used in commercial settings and more-conventional residential central equipment like the Carrier Greenspeed Infinity. I appreciate your help.

Clear definitions are important. Some would argue that inverter mini-splits are "variable refrigerant flow" and that typical VRF systems are "multi-splits" (because they are split and have multiple heads). I'd use "VRF means one compressor for multiple indoor units, each indoor unit having a variable metering valve".

Hopefully you can quantify things - the too frequent "A is better than B" is vague to the point of useless.
