Hard hvac duct installation

chrislene | Posted in Energy Efficiency and Durability on

Hi,
MD clubs contractor installed new hard pipe ducts. Upon close inspection (peeling back the bubble wrap) it appears as though all the taps/take offs were installed with the flange on top of the trunk’s bubble wrap. Additionally the few seams that were sealed with mastic did not dry before bubble wrap installed and remain wet. Installer says he is happy with the install and that it “looks good.” Equipment is 2 ton daiken fit and ducts are in conditioned space. I paid extra for air sealing and insulation. What to do? (Baltimore area if anyone out there can help)

That definitely doesn’t sound like a proper install. Taps should be sealed directly to the metal trunk, not over insulation like bubble wrap, that compromises both the seal and efficiency. Also, mastic needs to fully cure before covering, or it can trap moisture and eventually fail. Since you paid extra for proper air sealing and insulation, you have every right to expect it done correctly. I’d recommend having a third-party HVAC pro inspect the job and provide a written assessment. If it confirms the issues, use that to request the contractor correct the work, Or consider filing a complaint if they refuse.
