HRV wall cap question

user_8675309 | Posted in General Questions on

I have installed Broan #641 wall caps where my HRV duct enters and exits my home. This wall cap comes with a spring loaded damper which I obviously removed from the fresh air intake side. Should I remove the damper on the stale air (exhaust)wall cap? I ask because when I ran the unit on low speed, the damper is at about a 45 degree angle and may be causing a restriction of air flow? I still have time to remove it if reccommended. Climate zone 7 Anchorage Alaska.

    Jon,
It's always best to follow the installation instructions provided by the HRV manufacturer. What brand of HRV are you installing?

A 45 degree angle on the damper doesn't sound too bad -- but ideally, you'll be commissioning your HRV. Commissioning an HRV usually requires measuring the air flow. If you measure the airflow, you'll know the answer to your question.

HRV is a Broan 160 ECM. Nothing in manual except how far apart they should be.

Assuming the HRV will run continuously, you might save a Watt or 2 by removing the backdraft damper.
