Is there an easy way to switch off in-duct booster fans?

twassmer | Posted in General Questions on

Could not get upstairs in 1900 craftsman bungalow cooled with HVAC system until the contractor inserted a booster fan in each of the two ducts. Fans are coupled to the blower of the HVAC. Now in fall and probably throughout winter it gets way too hot upstairs. Is there a safe (and easy) DIY way to disconnect the fans from the blower to just have normal air flow going upstairs or would the fans block the airflow if not powered?

Thanks in advance!

Sure, disconnect power to them. **** BE SURE POWER SUPPLY IS SHUT OFF FIRST

also, with boosters off they will restrict the duct which may mean too little air reaching the space

The fans would slightly block the airflow, not enough to worry about I would think

They must be powered from the furnace end, so it should not be a big deal to get a switch wired in.

The fancy way would be to wire a ac/ heat thermostat upstairs but that would be significantly more involved.
