Linseed oil paint–your experience wanted!

user-1055444 | Posted in Green Products and Materials on

Through the years there have been a couple mentions of the stuff (Allback, Viking–old school linseed based paints) on the Q+A section here, but to date I haven’t seen any candid reviews or recaps of folks’ experience.

It seems like SOMEbody on here ought to have used the stuff (besides the blue heron house which used another one of their products, though seemingly not any paint)? I just want to hear it from somebody who’s painted with it, whether on new wood/siding or over existing paint–whatever! I’d even entertain third-hand accounts, though am not really looking for advice or accounts of other sorts of paints, etc.

Thank you

There are several discussion threads on GBA related to this topic. But you might want to check out this one (https://www.greenbuildingadvisor.com/blogs/dept/guest-blogs/siding-and-soffits-blue-heron-ecohaus). Scroll down to comment 10 or so for some back and forth on using pine tar/linseed paint as an exterior finish.

This paint is great for INTERIOR use. Gives an authentic-looking painted finish for antique furniture. However it is a nightmare for EXTERIOR use in a humid climate. Allback sent a mix of white paint with and without the zinc additive. The paint without zinc is black with mold or mildew. The paint with zinc is somewhat better but unacceptable. Allback's claim that their linseed oil is so pure that it doesn't mildew is false.
