Pool split system heat pump heaters

alan72 | Posted in General Questions on

Climate zone 5 (SE Michigan)

plan to heat the pool from early May to early October.

Does this exist?

We would like to put our pool equipment in our garage/storage room. Sounds like a typical pool heat pump water heater (not a ‘split’) would make the garage cold (not a bad problem in the summer) and may cause the heat pump to freeze.

Our garage is about 21’ x 24’.  We also have 2 sets of large doors that can be opened to allow for fresh air.

A resistive pool heater will make the garage too hot.

Any one have experience with this?  Or a solution?

(I know that moving the heater outside solves this.)

Thanks
Alan

First, what climate are you in, and through what range of the year are you heating the pool?

Second, I'm not sure what you mean about a split system. What part do you want in the garage and what part do you want elsewhere?

I edited the post above—- forgot to include that important information.

    Climate zone 5

Pool (heating) season is early May to early October.

What I meant by a split system would be something like a Sanden heat pump water heater - but for a pool.

    Thank you.

Heat pumps for pools are very common. Google "inverter pool heat pump" if you want something more efficient and quieter.

If you want to get fancy, there are mini split systems with heat recovery (Lg Multi VS with hydro kit) that can heat your pool and use the energy from that to cool your house. The unit would still have to be outdoor though.

The garage is nowhere near enough volume of air for one to run, they need to be installed outdoors.

Was about to suggest just such a thing. This Old House has You Tubes posted of connecting any AC to take waste heat from the AC to heat a pool. Ups your AC efficiency and heats your pool. Similar to a GSHP DeSuperheater, you may find yourself using AC when you dont really need to just so you can get the heated water you want..

DeSuperHeaters connect to GSHP to generate hot water when the GSHP is in AC mode. Many people who have them run AC more than they ever have before because they get basically free hot water.
