I recommend reaching out to an LP representative about using SmartSide over any 3D mesh rainscreen. LP's installation instructions call for a "non-compressible drainable house wrap", the mesh style rainscreens will compress slightly when nailing.

LP's installation instructions can be found at: https://assets.ctfassets.net/89s5b832f23c/5mta7pb2gWR4lXxcAUFrke/43238b059467e8ab796c20385c62b179/LP_SmartSide_Lap_Siding.pdf
Page 3 is where the non-compressible WRB language is found.

By the way, I think you are referencing a growing season climate zone in this question, most of Iowa is in climate zone 5 with a small portion in climate zone 6. Building to the requirements of climate zone 8 (Northern Canada and Alaska) would drastically affect the cost of your build.

    Hope this helps,
    Randy
